Showing Off?
“Never be afraid of competition. Competition breeds excellence and quality. Without it, complacency and neglect will grow.”
~ Dennis Carradin
Each fall, after a dormant summer season, the art world kicks into high gear with TONS of shows and activities. This year is no exception, and my art will be featured in a number of shows in the coming weeks and months (six are currently listed on my website under shows and exhibitions).
The first show is already underway, the Union County Arts Exhibition which features my piece, "Gold on Gold". You can visit this show in Union, SC until October 21.
Two of my pieces have been accepted for competition in this year's South Carolina State Fair. The artwork will all be on display at the State Fairgrounds Oct 9-20.
So why do I enter all these shows?
A little healthy competition can help you push yourself to do your very best. I consider my primary competition to be myself – the painter I was last week, last year, etc. It’s always good to try to be better than THAT artist. That said though, I like to push myself and test my artwork against my peers. So, I enter my artwork in juried shows. (In the art world, judging is called jurying, so a juried show is one in which a qualified judge critiques the art and selects the award winners.) It’s a great chance to see how my art stacks up and to see and learn from other artists’ work.
It's not really about showing off, although visibility is, of course, a part of it. Shows also provide a great opportunity for me to meet and learn from fellow artists and their artwork. It lets me be a part of cheering on my friends when they receive recognition, and it gives me a basis for comparison and feedback on the current state of my work. And it's fun when you win an award!
You can always see the list of current and upcoming shows and exhibitions on my website. Go by and see my artwork in person at any of the exhibit locations if you get a chance.
Save the Date
Another fun event coming up is a live Meet the Artist Showcase event. On December 14, I will be at Palmetto Fine Arts Gallery from 11am-3pm. I am a regularly featured artist in this wonderful local gallery and this event is a chance to come in, see me in person and view a wide variety of my currently available work. I will also be doing live painting throughout the day. It should be fun! Hope to see you there.
Commission Palooza
I've been working on a lot of commissions lately and have several wonderful new ones in the pipeline. I'm currently working on a large piece that will be mounted behind an antique mullioned window (as a frame) to hang on the wall. Can't wait to see this one finished and put together!
If you are interested in getting a commission for yourself or to give as a gift let me know. My next available commission slot is in December (for January delivery).
Of course, I have several more exciting paintings currently planned that are in the queue as well. Time to get painting!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my posts. I appreciate your continued support of my art journey!
Until next time,
Barbara
